Cows grazing peacefully in the meadow beyond the avenue of ancient oaks draw the eye outward towards the mountains. Grand scale is part of the lingering impression.

The farm has been in the family since 1855. Wide lawns, tall trees and a blend of colour and height in the flower beds contribute to the tranquil charm of the garden. Bring your own picnic and enjoy it under the trees. Stretch your legs by doing the short walk to the river.

Tucked under the shoulder of the mountain, the garden wraps itself round the house, leading the visitor through a dappled woodland zone, across the expansive lawn with its stunning borders, then down the rill to a reflecting pond with tiny white ducks. Lesley Stuart has used windows in the foliage to lead the eye deeper into the garden. Her roses are awesome.

PRIMESTON FARM
PRIMESTON FARM

The boldly elegant proportions of this formal green garden were set out by Una van der Spuy, many years ago. The effect depends on symmetry, immaculate lawns and masterful topiary. A shelter belt of giant trees provides respite from the weather and a dark backdrop to the variety of hues and textures created by the plantings. A novel divergence from the formal garden is a sensitive and unfolding space : An African garden with striking hard landscape features,  Plants for sale. Refreshments: lemon cordial.
